Places of interest near la mora

TAMARIT CASTLE

It is an ancient village near the sea, to the right of the mouth of the river Gaià, which stood on a rocky promontory. Of the old population survives in relatively good condition the walled enclosure -vil-la closa- and some remains of the old castle. It consists of the old municipal prisons, the church of the Assumption, the vicarage, the house of the Comú, the church square, two towers, a few houses, a battery of the sixteenth century and the remains of the bastide wall
the remains of the bastide wall from the time of Peter III the Ceremonious. The Romanesque church stands out, with three naves covered with barrel vaults and a straight chancel. It is one of the purest and earliest examples of Romanesque architecture in the Tarragona area. The castle is documented from the eleventh century and was destroyed in the War of the Reapers.

MÈDOL QUARRY

It is a large quarry, the most notable element of which is the Hoyo del Mèdol, where about 50,000 cubic meters of Miocene limestone were extracted, golden-colored and mostly fossiliferous (lumaquela), with the exception of the sandier parts, which have no fossils. In some walls of the quarry it is still possible to observe the extraction system of the ashlars. The most emblematic element is the Mèdol spire, a column testimony of more than 16 meters high.

VIL-LA DE ALTAFULLA

It is a small town in the province of Tarragona whose main attraction is that it is kept away from the hustle and bustle of tourism on the Costa Dorada. In 1998, the village was declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest for the medieval complex of the Vila Closa. And two years later, UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site for the Roman villa Els Munts. To get to know Altafulla, there is nothing better than walking through its streets and squares to soak up its history.

VIL-LA DE TORREDEMBARRA

The town of Torredembarra enjoys the privilege of having one of the few remaining natural beaches in Catalonia, Els Muntanyans, which contains semi-mobile dunes and saltwater lagoons. Other beaches of great tourist affluence are La Paella, where the promenade is located, and the beach of the Maritime Quarter. In the old part of the town you can admire the castle, dating from the mid-sixteenth century, which began to be restored in 1998, and whose importance lies in the fact that it is the only new civil building of the Catalan Renaissance that exists in Catalonia. The oldest building in Torredembarra is the Tower of the town, probably from the 12th or 13th century and of Mudejar style. The lighthouse is the last one built in Spain during the twentieth century.

ROC DE SANT GAIETÀ

It is a housing development in Roda de Berà, in Tarragona, which was built between 1964 and 1972. It is a small urbanization that resembles the Poble Espanyol in Barcelona, as it mixes different architectural styles with typical elements from different parts of Spain, such as a hórreo or an Andalusian patio. Strolling through its streets is a good option for a summer afternoon. In the main square of the village there is a building that simulates the Gothic style. In this building is the Roca Foradada Civic Center and the Luis del Olmo Radio Museum, opened in 2012 and where we can see radios from different eras and styles.

BOSC DE LA MARQUESA

The coves that are in the forest of the Marquesa are the last truly untouched natural space, and virgin, of the coast of Tarragona. And one of the few of the Catalan coast. They are integrated within a huge white pine forest, owned by a marquise who never wanted to sell the property, which preserved this unique place, as it is, for future generations.
